The Psychology of Firelight
In 2014, researchers from the University of Alabama studied the effect of firelight on the human body. The results were striking: watching a fire for just 15 minutes significantly reduced blood pressure and increased feelings of relaxation and social openness.
The longer participants watched, the calmer they became. A dose-dependent response. The researchers suggest this effect may be evolutionarily hardwired: for early humans, fire signified safety, warmth, and community.
Some refer to this calming shift as “the campfire effect” - a state of reduced stress, attentiveness, and deeper interpersonal connection triggered by exposure to natural flame.
